District Rural Development Agency
This is the twenty-first year of the functioning of the Rural Development Agency in the State. The functions of the Agency are as specified under:-
i) To identify and assist the rural poor who come from economically backward target groups i.e. small and marginal farmers, landless labourers, marginal fishermen, rural unemployed youth and rural artisans.
ii) To study the problems of the target groups and formulate schemes taking into account their economic conditions.
iii) To boost up their economic status in order to bring them above the poverty line.
iv) To provide wage employment to rural poor, during off farm season and to provide durable community assets.
v) To train the unemployed youth and unskilled artisans and provide them gainful employment.
vi) To promote rural artisans and provide infrastructure support.
Though agriculture is the main activity of the State, it has not become a full time occupation of the rural people because of smallholdings and availability of limited irrigation facilities. However, due to high literacy rate there is a growing unemployed amongst educated youth.
Due attention is also given to tertiary sector programmes like Industry, Service, Trade (I.S.B) Taking into account the touristic trade in the State, rural people have been assisted in trades like motorcycle to ply as taxi, setting up tea and cold drink stalls and mini shops at beaches and other places of tourist attraction.
